Tribute to Brenda McCullough
By Porsha Pickett

We dedicate this special issue of OSTA Real Talk Newsletter to the memory of one very dear sister, Mrs. Brenda McCullough.  OSTA Founder, Denise Burns, met Brenda one evening in late October 2005.  Denise overheard Brenda having a conversation and was compelled to introduce herself, offer a listening ear, and give Brenda a card to give her a call sometime.  It was at that time that their divine connection began.  At that time, Brenda was coping with the loss of her two sons, within the span of two years, and a diagnosis of breast cancer.

Being that Brenda seemed to have endured so much, OSTA graciously sought to help our new sister overcome.  Brenda McCullough was one of the first “Adopt-A-Sister” Program recipients.  For Thanksgiving of 2005, we prepared a Thanksgiving Dinner, complete with an entire cooked meal, and delivered it to Brenda so that she could still be blessed with a Thanksgiving meal despite her illness, and inability to cook dinner for herself.

Brenda was diagnosed with breast cancer in August 2004.  She had shown her gratitude for the compassionate care she received at Washington Adventist Hospital Center by giving the nurses teddy bears she had customized herself. This is just how much of an appreciative spirit Brenda was.

In some of our last visits and conversations with Brenda, she said that she was grateful for OSTA and for finding someone to listen and help her through her ordeal.  Brenda departed this earth in February 2006.  We rest in knowing that during our last visit with her in the hospital, just four days before she passed, she found the strength to pronounce that she had found peace and thanked OSTA for encouraging her to focus on Jesus and not her pain.  Brenda’s spirit was a blessing that we will forever cherish!

Brenda thanked us for reaching out to her, but we give tribute to her for her strength and being an inspiring spirit for One Sister to Another to continue to help women like her.
