Bernice Breast Cancer Survivor Story
By Bernice

Bernice Testimony

I am a 79-year young cancer Survivor Loving Life!  I was faced with breast cancer (carcinoma, malignant tumors) on more than one occasion.  Although I went many rounds with this menace of diseases, I won the battle by praying and staying close to God (my Lord and Savior), having God fearing Doctors, and gaining the support from my loyal family and friends.

This is my testimony.   Pray that it will help heal women all over the world, giving them faith and courage to survive the ordeal.  I mourned the loss of two daughters who had long battles with breast cancer.  In addition, my mother, another daughter, and a grand-daughter departed due to other forms of malignant cancer.  Although we were saddened when they passed on, I reminded my children and myself that it is alright to grieve for our loved ones, but we must remember God gave His only son to pave the way for us to have eternal life.  I asked God not to let their struggle with the disease go in vain.  I also asked God to grant the Doctors, Scientist, and my family the wisdom to deal with these kinds of situations in order to eliminate pain and save lives.  God kept our faith strong.  We became proud participants in the Race for the Cure, donated funds to the American Cancer Society, and we even got others involved in the cause.  I thank God that scientist have since increased their knowledge concerning preventive measures and that we were able to help in our own small way.

In November 1999 (days before the Thanksgiving holiday), at age 71, my faith was tested again.  During one of my regularly scheduled exams, a small carcinoma tumor was detected in my left breast.  I never felt a thing.  After being informed, I underwent a mastectomy.  Amazingly, the following day, I did not require pain medicine, and my appetite was great.  The Doctors were surprised at my progress and to learn that I wanted to go home early.  They agreed to discharge me the day before Thanksgiving.  I had a lot to be thankful for, and I wanted to share the news with the family that “I am a Survivor”.  During a follow-up visit to my Oncologist, we agreed daily hormone therapy (Tamoxifen 20 mg tablets) for five (5) years was the preferred post operative and preventive treatment for me.  Chemotherapy and radiation were not chosen.  I began my therapy.

My children and grandchildren continued participating in the Race for the Cure and making donations to the American Cancer Society (in remembrance of our loved ones and in my honor).  My faith remained strong.

Almost two years later, in August 2002, at the age of 75 (during another routine scheduled Doctor’s visit), I was diagnosed with a carcinoma tumor in my right breast.  I took a deep breath, and prayed to God.  My faith became even greater.  On August 16, 2002, I had a partial mesactomy (including additional tissue samples taken from the surrounding area) to determine if additional tumors were present.  I went home immediately after surgery, and the samples were sent to the lab.  On August 17, 2002, my surgeon called and explained the lab results determined additional tumors were present.  I returned for yet another surgery (to remove the tumor, tissues in the surrounding area, and one lymph node for testing).  Then on August 21, 2002, my test results revealed the cancer had not spread through the lymph node; however, there were multiple carcinomas of the breast.  I prayed to God and returned to the hospital as recommended by my Surgeon for a mesactomy of the right breast.

The day after this mesactomy, no pain medication was required.  There was some drainage (which is normal).  I felt as if my breast was still there.  You see I didn’t even miss it.  I asked to go home early once again (as I could not stay in bed).  I was up, running, and telling everyone what God did for me.  My Oncologist began treating me with a different type of hormone prevention therapy (Aromison because I did not respond to the Tamoxifen as well as he thought I should).  I am a living testimony of what God can do.  I am an 8‑year survivor of cancer from left breast and a 5-year survivor of cancer from my right breast.  I pray daily, follow my Doctor’s orders, eat healthier, and look forward to a continued happy and healthy life in the Jesus Christ, Our Lord.

I currently have a 71-year old sister who was recently diagnosed with cancer of the bladder and pelvis.  I am praying for her, sharing my experiences with her, and giving her my support.  Again, I pray that my experience is a blessing to Women all over the World.  My advice to those going through this ordeal is to trust God with all your heart.  He will never leave nor forsake you.  Know that He can heal anyway He so chooses, with His divine miraculous power or through His earthen vessels of clay better known as Doctors.

Keep praying, keep the faith, and be encouraged, you can make it!

God Loves You and So Do I.
